About

Learning

Along with literacy, math, and science, we also place a large emphasis on relationships and social-emotional learning, cognitive skills, language development, and motor skills.

The basis for all of this learning and skill building? Play! Toddlers are hard wired and built to learn through play, and we make it the heart of all of our learning in the Young Toddler Program.

By playing with puzzles and building materials in the block area, children are developing early math and science skills. Through read alouds, music and movement, and conversation with teachers and their classmates, children are developing language and early literacy skills. Our sensory table can hit all three (math, science, and literacy) depending on the materials provided. We periodically rotate toys and materials to keep students interested and engaged in play in the classroom. Even when students are engaging in free play, they're learning just as much as they are during a structured activity.

Our schedule includes lots of time for physical activity - both indoors and outdoors - with focused bursts of work time. When the children have had time to run, jump, climb, slide, and dance they are able to come into our work space and focus on the inquires and provocations we present to them.

Allowing for plenty of play time means children are able to devote more attention to learning, making those focused bursts more meaningful and productive. Children's work is then displayed in the classroom for reflection, reigniting the spark of interest in learning, or opening up new questions and inquires children might have.
